Lawndale is a city in Los Angeles County, in the South Bay region of the Greater Los Angeles Area. Redondo Beach borders it on the west and southwest, Hawthorne on the north and Torrance on the southeast. The land was once part of Rancho Sausal Redondo. In 1905, Charles B. Hopper subdivided the area and named it after the Chicago neighborhood of the same name. A railway once ran down Railway Avenue, now Hawthorne Boulevard, and Lawndale was incorporated as a city on December 28, 1959.
